PBS NewsHour: UK Privacy and other concerns re facial recognition software

28/07/2019

Some rather worrying issues here around accuracy, oversight, regulations etc

The potential use as a repressive mechanism by the state is extremely worrisome

British civil rights groups are calling on the government to suspend the use of facial recognition technology now being tested by police on the general public, claiming the technology is in a legal vacuum and could impact privacy. But some British law enforcement agencies contend the technology helps them find criminals wanted for serious offenses. Special correspondent Malcolm Brabant reports.

It also doesn’t work as advertised.

The Victorian government introduced Face ID in place of the usual 100 point system (Licence, Passport, Medicare Card, Bank Statements) for people applying for a solar power subsidy.

The software accesses driver licence photos. The problems became apparent when people who are not permitted to wear glasses when the photo is taken, are unable to follow the instructions on the ID software unless they are wearing glasses. 🙂

The whole idea of using facial recognition software in public areas is just another case of security theatre gone wrong. It is something being done because the technology allows it, not because it provides a benefit.

Still, if you are worried about mass surveillance, best turn off your cell phone unless you want to make a call, and never use in Interwebs without a VPN.
